Knobbed cylinders

Each cylinder slides into its well, giving the child an enormous sense of satisfaction.

Set 1: height and diameter of the cylinders decreases. the smallest one is 1cm dia. and 1cm height,the biggest cylinder is 5.5cm dia. and 5.5cm height

Set 2: diameter decreases as the height increases. the cyliners are 1cm dia.&5.5cm height,1.5cm dia.&5cm height.... 5cm dia.%1cm hiehgt.

Set 3: diameter decreases as the height remains constant. the cylinders are all 5.5cm height,the dia. are 1-5.5cm

Set 4: height decreases as the diameter remains constant. the cylinders are all 2.5cm dia. the height are 1-5.5cm

So children know all the changing regular when use the 4 blocks and cylinders.

The knobbed cylinders introduce the visual discrimination of size, they refine the child's perception of dimension and prepare for mathematics activities such as comparison, grading and seriation. The blocks provide a control of error and even a young child can use them successfully.

The child initially works on one block at a time, later the sets are combined and the interrelationships in size are experienced.


Warm remind: Use language such as 'greater', 'smaller', 'heavier', or 'lighter' to compare quantities. Use language such as 'circle' or 'bigger' to describe the shape and size of solids and flat shapes.
