1.faceplate overlay materials

The three usual materials utilized for the graphic overlays are:

Lexan/PC(Polycarbonate),Mylar/PET(Polyester ,and Vinyl(PVC)

Polyester offers the best flex life and chemical resistance .

Polycarbonate offers better weathering characteristics and ink adhesive .

PVC are cost saving when the overlay is textured,but it is not environmental.

Surface finishes include velvet textured ,anti-glare matte, gloss clear ,selectively textured

and anti-microbial .

2. Keypad Button Selection

For obtaining a good feedback from the buttons, there are usually two methods:

A. Raising certain areas of the graphic overlay by tooling--Raised button. And the shapes and styles of the embossing can be various flexibly. Common embossing types include: Rim embossing, pillow embossed and poly dome .

B. Adding extra parts on the switch to get the crisp effect--Metal snap domes. it can be provided in several different size,shape and force according to the interface .

3. Display Windows

Integral display windows and LED indicators can be easily incorparated into the membrane switch design .

4. Connector Tail

A male or female connector can be fitted to the end of the tail .Solder pins can also be provided.

A pin of .01” is the most common ,Using a ZIF connector will be reduce the membrane switch cost as the tail will not need own connector and the pitch can be reduced to 1mm.

5. EMI / RFI / ESD Shielding

Using an aluminum foil shielding / a clear ITO electrical conductive polyester

Shields can be designed for the following :

a.ESD ( Electrostatic Discharge )

b.EMI ( Electromagnetic interface )

c.RFI (Radio Frequency Interface )

6. Integrated LEDs

Surface mount single LED's can be integrated into a membrane switch circuit .

A standard membrane switch is not thick enough to accomomodate the height of most surface mounted LEDs.For this reason ,The overlay is generally embossed in the window erea .

7.Circuit Design Options

For more stringent environmental requirements, the printed silver circuit can be replaced with a copper and polyimide construction. These construction designs are often called “Kapton” circuits and offer advantage with regard to current carrying capacity and better resistance to moisture.

8.Color Matching

Sub-surface graphic production is done on the underside of transparent plastic materials through which the design is viewed .

Digital imaging enables the use of CMYK (4 color process) printing to creat full-color design ,gradients and blends as well as enabling phtographic images to be effectively utilized .
