What is the dezincification?

The copper alloy used in brass valves contains zinc and lead with copper as a base.When brass valves are subjected to unfavorable service conditions,the zinc component contained in the copper alloy separates from the copper base and the metal corrodes.This is called dezincification.
In case of brass valve,the body,bonnet and other brass parts easily corrode due to the big percent of zinc contained in the alloy to cause extreme dezincification.But bronze material parts hardly corrode due to the small percent of zinc contained in the alloy.

What causes dezincification?

The following factors cause dezincification.These factors are generally believed to occur together,rather than independently.
1)Excessive aqueous solution in acidity.
2)Warm water containing excessive free carbonic acid with high electric conductivity.
3)High electric conductivity with excessive presence of chlorides and sulfides.
4)Copper or vinyl chloride pipes.
5)Excessive dissolved oxygen.

As a professional factory for DZR brass fittings,CAMEGA use this alloy to be heat-treated in order to comply with the dezincification resistance requirments mentioned above.Drawn rods,bars or sections for machining are generally supplied by the brass supplier in the as "heat treated" condition,and if so don't require further heat treatment (as long as no hot-working operation is performed in the manufacture process).Products that are made by forging require heat-treatment after the forging process in accordance with the brass manufacture's instructions in order to reach the dezincification requirements (the heat-treatment process involves holding the brass at a temperature of approx. 500-550°C for a minimum of about four hours followed by air cooling).Any hot-working operation (e.g brazing,forming etc.)will generally destroy the dezincification properties of brass.Heat-treatment must take place after all such operations.
