Papaya papain

Papain is a purified proteolytic substance derived from the tropical fruit papaya. It is a thiol protease with wide substrate specificity.

Description and solubility

White to light tan, amorphous powder. Soluble in water, the solution being

colorless to light yellow and more or less opalescent; practically insoluble in alcohol, in chloroform, and in ether.

Effects

1. Clinical practice

1.1 Home remedy treatment: for jellyfish, bee, yellow jacket (wasps) stings, mosiquito bites, and possibly stingray wounds, breaking down the protein toxins in the venom;
