Vietnam's bronze casting industry is the traditional craft established nearly four thousand years ago. Archaeological studies show that 2500 years ago, the bronze casting industry in Vietnam had reached the height of technology and aesthetic with very prominent products as bronze drums of Van Lang - Au Lac culture. Nowadays, the handicraft bronze casting in Vietnam is becoming more and more perfect and developing strongly.

To have an original fine bronze product, we have to carry out well three following stages:
1. Germ Casting
Depending on dimension and sophistication of details of products, every family has a secretly handed down recipe, in general we can introduce as followings:
First we make a frame for the product (by soil, wooden, wax or gypsums) then we use this frame to make a mould by mixture of soil and husk. Casting frame is made carefully to create the accuracy of products.
Next stage is the germ casting. In this stage, we mix bronze with other metals on the suitable rates with molten alloy. Then we pour this mixture into the mould. This progress has to obey a very strict recipe to create the perfect products without cracks, defect…
Finally, when a product becomes cold they remove the mould to take the product out. Naturally, one mould is only used for one product.

2. Making cool - Carving

The making cool is a first important stage. When cast products have the full standards in shape, lines, patterns, the workers have to make cool. In order to do this, we have to have many tools such as drilling machine, wooden tables, knives… With many dedicated tools craftsman can make all kinds of lines he wants. These are intaglios, alto-relievo...

3. Bronze encrusting
The bronze encrusting is a special industry in Vietnam. Nature of this stage is that the precious metals as gold, silver are given on the surface of the products to make our products more valuable and more artistic. Probably each of them is one unique product. Three iron-carving and two iron-carving products are extremely valuable due to their artistic, unique aspects: On the surface of the product, they drill deep patterns; then they use slender iron fibres made of gold, silver or brass to fill in these patterns. After casting moulds, the products would be polished and carved with tremendous care by our craftsmen in order to make them alive.

4. Making colors
This is also a stage called secretly handed down recipe of every craftsmen’s family. Therefore, craftsmen can make different colors suitable to various products even the antique products had stained and rusty colors through thousands of years. Especially, the colors are still maintained as it was for hundreds of years later.
5. Bronze curving
Depending on various products with size, shape (usually limited weight and thickness, sophisticated shape) craftsmen can replace casting method by curving .This is a very unique and high artistic craft, which can express exactly the small patterns.
