Injection for animal

Pharmacological properties:

Dexamethasone is a very potent synthetic glucocorticosteroid, its anti-inflammatory effects being 30 times stronger than those of cortisone and 7-10 times stronger than those of prednisolone. In addition to its antiphlogistic properties, dexamethasone also shows extraordinary anti-allergic, anti-stress and gluconeogenetic activities. Mineralocorticoid activity is minimal.

Indication:

Metabolic disorders such as: ketosis in cattle and puerperal toxaemia in ewes and sows.

Non-infectious inflammatory processes, especially acute musculoskeletal inflammations such as: arthritis, periarthritis, tendovaginitis, bursitis, luxations, myositis, osselets and sprains.

As an aid in acute infectious diseases (e.g. acute mastitis, metritis, pneumonia, polyarthritis in calves) in combination with suitable anti-infectious therapy.

allergic conditions, e.g. asthma, allergic skin affections (eczema, urticaria,pruritis, ), laminitis in horses and cattle, snake-bites.

Induction of parturition in ruminants during the last stage of pregnancy ( delivery within 2-4 days).

Dosage and administration:

By intravenous, intramuscular or subcutaneous (dogs, cats) injection:

Cats, dogs (0.1-0.2 mg/kg b.w.) 0.25-0.5 ml/5 kg

Cattle, horses (2.5-5 mg/100 kg b.w.) 5-10 ml/400 kg

Sheep, goats, calves: (2-4 mg/50 kg ) 1-2 ml/50 kg

If necessary repeat with 2 days intervals in dogs and cats and 3-4 days intervals in other animals.

--For induction of parturition in cows (given within 1 week before expected calving date): (5 mg/100 kg b.w.)

--Puerperal toxaemia and induction of parturition in sheep and goats: (2.5 mg/10 kg b.w.)

By intraarticular injection: according to the extension of joint and animal weight: 0.25 to 4 ml.

Contra-indications, adverse effects, warnings:

Contra-indications: cardiac and renal insufficiencies, hypercorticism (Cushing's Syndrom), diabetes, osteoporosis, viraemia, simultaneous vaccination.

Special care should be taken if used during the last trimester of pregnancy (Partus induction and premature parturition may occur).

If infection is present or suspected, corticoid therapy should be supported by appropriate antimicrobial therapy (suppression of immune response).

Long-term treatment with higher doses may cause symptoms of hypercorticism.

Since abrupt cessation of chronic administration may result in adrenocortical insufficiency (symptoms of hypocorticism), gradual withdrawal is advisable following a prolonged course of administration.

Other possible adverse effects are: allergic reactions and laminitis; decrease of milk production, endometritis
