There are several types of Smart Cards, most of which differ just at the software level. A hardware based difference is whether the card requires contact with a Card Accepting Device (CAD) or not.

Contact cards are the familiar ones with a small gold plate about ½" in diameter on the front. When the card is inserted into a CAD, it makes contact with electrical connectors that transfer data to and from the chip. The basic characteristics of contact cards are specified in ISO 7816.
